(no subject)

The last week or so has been very much a roller coaster of a ride.

Last Thursday evening saw me crash the car by driving into the rear of a stationary car...brain ceased to function and too late to stop in time. Fortunately no-one was hurt but the car is 1/2 foot shorter than the manufacturer planned. Insurance company have contacted me today to tell me the car is not a repairable proposition so they into to pay me for it and be done.

Then whilst down the allotment I managed to fall down a well where the rotten cover gave way underfoot and I ended up with my right leg dangling into the well with the rest of me 'stuck' outside whilst I hung onto the fence.

I had a riding lesson on Monday and applying the rule that 'bad things happen in three's' I have visions of being flung from the back of the horse to badly injure myself....fortunately this didn't occur so I'm hoping the worst of the week is over.

On a positive note this evening I have successfully enrolled into a 36 week photography course which I am greatly looking forward to. Had the college not decided to withdraw from City & Guilds it would have been a level 1 course....however the tutor is still the same so he's stated that whilst it won't be a City & Guild certificate at the end of the course it will be to the same level.

Hoorah I survived....so far

Well today was race day and I manage to haul myself round the full 13.1 miles without stopping in 2 hours 21 mins (ish. well that's what my watch said when I remembered to stop it).

The first 11 miles were enjoyable but at mile 11.5 I started to develop a stitch which I managed to lose but mile 12. However at this point my legs had decided that 12.5 miles 'was more than enough'. However I managed to get round the last .6 mile and was very glad to cross the finish line.

sixtine suggested that I should have sprinted over the finish as that was what everyone else had done....I await her run next year when she can give me a practical demonstration of the 'sprint finish'.

Lastly I wanted to give a huge THANK YOU to everyone who sponsored me as I have now broken the £500 barrier.

Also a 'special' thank you to quondam as her initial backing gave me the motivation to stick to the training plan which paid off. Thank you.

Currently my leg are somewhat the worse for wear but this now gives sixtine immense humour to watch me hobble about the house.

Advice on Digital Photography

Knowing that there are a number of my friends who have great knowledge on digital photography I thought I would ask the following two questions:-
1. I am interested in getting a book about digital photography with the aim of improving the quality of the pictures I take. Please can people advise on any books they have found useful.
2. I am tempted to delve into the world of digit SLRs and wondered if anyone can provide any advice. I have a provision budget of £300-£350 and have seen the likes of the Nikon D40, etc. Again anything anyone can add would be useful.

Utter Madness....but for the right reasons

As most of you know sixtine fell off our horse last year and she had to be airlifted from the beach by the air ambulance. To help this fabulous service I have entered into the Warrington half-marathon and am looking for sponsorship.

So to this effect I am asking people to sponsor me to run the 13.1 miles which will take me approx. 2 1/2 hours to run *gulp*. To that end I have set-up a 'Just Giving' website that can be accessed here

Please feel free to pass on my request to others as I would like to raise as much as I can.

Thank you very much for anything you can give to support this fantastic service.

Not mine...but I love it...

I have recently come across a poem by Yeats that I adore and just wanted to share: -

'Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half-light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.'

Additionally I have penciled the 29th March 2009 into my diary as this is the date for the Liverpool half-marathon. There are a couple of people of work interested in training for it so I should have the motivation to keep going. It is 12 weeks to go so I have training plan, treadmill and much blister cream...

And so the holiday ends...

Back to work tomorrow :-(
On a more positive note I have ordered some interesting reads from amazon.
I have ordered 'girl with a dragon tattoo' and 'the book thief'
These are definitely out of my normal league as more normal read is scifi & fantasy
2009 is definitely a year for new experiences

Who would have thought....

Back in January this year I started to learn to ride given the overwhelming number of family members (wife & son) who had taken up horse riding.

Now 10 months on I've owned a horse, sold a horse, and have a horse on part loan (3 days a week).

Last weekend we all went to the Horse of the Year show which I (along with the rest of the family) I greatly enjoyed. Best of all was the Pony Club games as the sheer madness of it all always stuns me.

Tomorrow I have been invited out on a hack to 'the beach'. This is the same ride that resulted in sixtine falling off and shattering her shoulder along with cracking her pelvis. Here's hoping I can avoid the same fate. It did however concern me when I was reading over sixtine's shoulder her horsey mag which had an article entitled '5 Ways to avoid Death when falling off'. Ohhhh the confidence that has inspired.

Currently sixtine is surfing the web looking for a replacement riding hat. I was officially berated because mine cost £55. The one she is looking at is £140...oh revenge will be sweet.

However whilst at the HOYS I did manage to persuade sixtine to buy me a pair of long riding boots that she has been coveting for sometime at a mere snip of £220. Still she has 3 pairs to my 2.
